The problem
Knob-and-tube and aluminum branch wiring don't fail dramatically — they fail quietly, behind the wall, until a junction box scorches or the insurance carrier finds out at renewal. Either way, the bill comes either as a fire or a non-renewal.
If your home was built before 1970, the original wiring is likely still in part of the house. Knob-and-tube has no ground, fails when buried in insulation, and is excluded from most modern homeowner policies. Aluminum branch wiring expands and contracts under load, loosens at every termination over time, and is the documented cause of a significant share of older-home fires. We pull the obsolete circuits and re-run them with code-compliant copper Romex, ground everything, and add AFCI/GFCI protection where required.
“We don’t hand off jobs to strangers. Every breaker, every outlet, every permit — that’s us.”
Documented work
Recent whole-home rewire.

New copper Romex run through framing — replacing original knob-and-tube.
Same home post-rewire — recessed cans, dimmers, every outlet grounded.
Strategic openings only — pulled wire fished from above and below.
Living area rough — outlets and lighting set, ready for drywall close-up.
Why Northern
What you’re actually paying for.
Insurance documentation
Every rewire ends with photos, inspection sign-off, and a written scope summary for your insurer. We've cleared every carrier we've worked with.
Phased scope possible
Don't have to do the whole house at once. Common phased scopes: kitchen + bath rewire, all-aluminum removal, or single-floor knob-and-tube clearance.
Patch coordination
We work with your GC or your finish trades on drywall patching. If you're DIY, we leave clean square openings that any drywaller can close.
Smart-home ready
Pulling new wire is the time to add neutral wires to switch boxes — required for most smart switches. We pull neutrals as standard, no extra cost.
Implementation
What the day looks like.
Rewires range from partial (single floor, kitchen + bath only, or all aluminum out) to full whole-home. Each scope is quoted on the on-site walk-through with a clear line-item estimate. We coordinate with finish trades if drywall is being patched, schedule the inspector at the right milestones, and document the entire scope at the end.
Clearing knob-and-tube or aluminum is often required by insurers and at closing. We deliver inspection-ready documentation alongside the install.
Frequently asked
The questions that come up before booking.
How long does a whole-home rewire take?
Depends on scope. Single-floor partial rewires run 3-5 days. Full whole-home rewires on a 3-4 bedroom house run 2-3 weeks. Bigger jobs phased over multiple weeks so the home stays habitable.
Will the walls all need to be opened up?
No. Most circuits can be fished from above and below with strategic openings at switch boxes, junction points, and headers. Typical opening pattern is small, repeatable rectangles — not the whole wall.
Will I have to move out?
Almost never. Most rewires phase room-by-room, leaving the rest of the house powered. We sequence the work so the kitchen and at least one bathroom always have power.
Do you patch the drywall?
We don't run finish drywall ourselves — but we coordinate with your GC, your drywaller, or leave clean openings sized for standard patches if you're DIY.
Will my insurance carrier accept the finished work?
Yes. The combination of the signed inspection card, photos, and a written scope summary clears every carrier we've worked with. We deliver that package at the end.
